SEROKS screening at UPFI

One rainy night, a xerox operator meets a mysterious woman in a dark, passionate tale of duplicating fates and identities.. .

"Seroks", an intriguing digital indie film by Ed Lejano, will have its UP premiere on February 28 (Wed.) at the UPFI Cine Adarna with screening times at 5 & 7pm.

The pyschological drama, a production of Cinema One Originals, makes use of the film noir style and fuses elements of the thriller, in conveying a recurring pattern of duplicating events that reflect the film's title.

Set in the vibrant world of Recto, Juliana Palermo plays the mysterious woman who moves into a boarding house above a xerox shop. Palermo's femme fatale character soon encounters the xerox operator who works below her (played by Neil Ryan Sese).

As the story unfolds, its diverse, offbeat characters get intertwined into a mosaic of human experience where they all seem to meet a similar "xeroxed" fate. Set amidst contemporary realities of piracy as it tackles the nature of destiny and identities, whether genuine or fake... this is the intriguing world of "Seroks".

For ticket information, please contact UPFI Cine Adarna at 9263640 or text Kriz 09209450344.

"Seroks has a sense of experimentation both in visuals and narrative, ultimately allowing different stories to be told in different ways."
--Yonina Chan, Manila Bulletin

"One of the more interesting entries in this year's Cinema One Digital Film Fest...the production is an exhilarating mishmash of themes - convoluted sex, violence, drama, romance, fate, and the human mind."
--Rito Asilo, Philippine Daily Inquirer

The Fourth World War
From the front-lines of conflicts in Mexico,
Argentina, South Africa, Palestine, Korea, 'the North'
from Seattle to Genova, and the 'War on Terror' in New
York, Afghanistan, and Iraq. It is the story of men
and women around the world who resist being
annihilated in this war. ??While our airwaves are
crowded with talk of a new world war, narrated by
generals and filmed from the noses of bombs, the human
story of this global conflict remains untold. " The
Fourth World War" brings together the images and
voices of the war on the ground. It is a story of a
war without end and of those who resist. The product
of over two years of filming on the inside of
movements on five continents, " The Fourth World War"
is a film that would have been unimaginable at any
other moment in history. Directed by the makers of
"This Is What Democracy Looks Like" and "Zapatista",
produced through a global network of independent media
and activist groups, it is a truly global film from
our global movement.

Independetnt publisher Chaithawat (Tom) Tulathon is an

and barely squeezes family time in between. Veng is an
independent filmmaker who tries her luck as "TNT" in
Tokyo. By day, she goes around photographing and
filming. By night, she is a karaoke bar hostess. In
Fukuoka, three Pinays give meaning to the term
"Japayuki." Emily, Marlene and Kay who are all married
to Japanese nationals reveal their stories as
entertainers in Fukuoka's red light district.

2 March (Friday)
Milo Sogueco: GROOVY: THE COLORS OF PACITA ABAD
Garry Beitel: CHEZ SCHWARTZ (to be presented by
Visiting Canadian Producer Barry Lazar)
Chez Scwartz

Chez Schwartz takes us inside a year in the life of
Schwartz's Deli – the 75-year-old landmark on
Montreal's historic Main. Filmed through changing
seasons, Chez Schwartz is an evocative, cinematic
portrait of a small spunky deli known worldwide
equally for its atmosphere and smoked meat.Through
observational vignettes, we come to know the men of
Schwartz's: the waiters and busboys, meat cutters and
grill men who have become fixtures of the deli – some
for as long as 40 years. Most are immigrants from
Portugal, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia.
While they serve generously stacked sandwiches, fries,
pickles and cherry colas to an array of local and
international patrons, we discover how a legendary
institution transforms their lives. We also meet
another group of men: the panhandlers who have
stationed themselves at the front entrance for the
past 15 years and earn their livelihood from the
deli's patrons. ??As these stories interweave, we
become immersed in the restaurant's culture and daily
rituals. Lush and sensual cinematography follows the
daily preparation and consumption of spiced smoked
meat and condiments. Our camera moves between
privileged revelations of character and simple
gastronomy as we capture the magic of a classic 'hole
in the wall' packed with atmosphere and dynamism.
??Garry Beitel is a Montreal based documentary
filmmaker. His probing portraits of individuals and
communities have been broadcast on Canadian television
for over 20 years, winning national and international
awards. He works primarily in Canada – both in English
and French - but has also made films in West Africa,
South America and Mexico. His acclaimed Bonjour!
Shalom! won three Gémeaux awards including Best Quebec
Documentary (1991). Garry has an MA in Film and
Communications from McGill University where he has
been a Faculty Lecturer (since 1988) teaching courses
on Documentary Film and Cultural Studies.

Aninag
"Aninag" ("Light's Play") is Rianne Hill Soriano's
first film after graduating from the University of the
Philippines Film Institute. This 35mm short feature is
a film grant from the National Commission for Culture
and the Arts. In this film, Isabel journeys in a dream
world with her new mystical friends "Saya" (Happiness)
and "Pag-asa" (Hope) in an attempt to overcome her
isolation due to her blindness.

This short film plunges into the domain of a blind
girl and her struggle to overcome her fear and
depression. It promotes hope against the setback of
interests of the incapacitated, the frustrated, and
the depressed, who tend to lose hope because of the
tribulations that come into their lives. The film
provides particular appeal to the children audience.
Most of the film stocks came from Kodak Philippines
through the filmmaker's prize as Kodak Film Awardee
2003 of the University of the Philippines Film
Institute with her thesis film "Karsel" ("Prison").
"Aninag" competed at the New York International
Independent Film and Video Festival 2005 and the Louis

IMAHE NASYON screening

IMAHE NASYON WILL HAVE ITS REGULAR RUN ON
FEB.21-27 AT THE indieSINE ROBINSON'S GALLERIA

view trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j4Oinb8dAY

"WHAT HAPPENED AFTER 1986?"
20 YEARS. 20 FILMS. 20 FILMMAKERS. 1 NATION.

IMAHE NASYON… a groundbreaking, conceptual omnibus film by 20
alternative filmmakers who were tasked to present their personal
visions on national issues. It is underlined by a conceptual question
asked by line producers Jon Red & Carol Bunuan-Red:

"How do you see the past 20 years?"

In 2006, IMAHE NASYON attempts to answer the question.
That question also became a thematic and uniting thread across the
films, but each film is made of different cinematic genres that is
representative of the filmmaker's style, stressing the concept that in
spite of individual visions we share the same goal: to depict a
truthful image of the nation.

The omnibus project was conceptualized by Jon and Carol in
commemoration of Edsa 1, a political revolution that changed their
generation forever. It is also a celebration of the struggle and
growth of Philippine Independent Cinema which, in essence, is a
cultural revolution only now gaining public acceptance.

A unique and common element in IMAHE NASYON is rising Indie actor PING MEDINA
who is featured in all the 20 films. He represents the next
generation who will play a crucial role in the direction of the nation
and its image.

Imahe Nasyon was directed by Poklong Anading, Emman Dela Cruz, Yeye
Calderon, Neil Daza, Lav Diaz, Tad Ermitaño, Mes de Guzman, Rox Lee,
Topel Lee, Milo Paz, Robert Quebral, Ellen Ramos, Raymond Red, R.A.

METROPOLIS
(with live score by Rubber Inc.)

21 February 2007, 5pm
Faculty Center Conference Room, UP Diliman

Tickets: P50

The Goethe-Institute Manila joins the celebrations of 110 Years of Cinema in the Philippines by holding a special screening of the renowned 1927 film "Metropolis". The film, directed by Fritz Lang, opens the Sining, Pelikula at Kasaysayan (SPeaK) FIlm Festival, organized by the Mowelfund Film Institute in cooperation with the UNESCO "Memory of the World" Philippine Committee and the UP Department of Art Studies.

Incidentally, the festival will also serve as the launch for the Philippine chapter of the "Memory of the World" Committee, which recognizes and preserves the world's documentary heritage. In 2001, "Metropolis" became the very first film to be committed to UNESCO's "Memory of the World" Register.

The film is set in the year 2026, when the population is divided into two groups: the Thinkers, who enjoy and live in a futuristic city of splendor, and the Workers, who lead an archaic slave existence underground. Freder, son of the city's mastermind, sees the inhumane working conditions subjected to those living underground and abandons his privileged life to join the oppressed workers in a revolt. Widely considered the first science fiction film ever made, "Metropolis" is Fritz Lang's most popular and most celebrated film. It will be screened with a live score to be performed by electronic group Rubber Inc.

Cinekatipunan this week

THIS WEEK AT CINEKATIPUNAN
19-24 February 2007 (Monday to Saturday)

Cinekatipunan opens this week with selections from
Filipino-American directors with FLIP SHORTS. Tudla
Productions presents a take on Philippine social
realism in their depiction of the current-day
Philippine National Railways and its surrounding
communities. Chabet's Choice for Wednesday is a
documentary on the life of mail-art and performance
artist Ray Johnson. Sinekalye presents new
documentaries on sites of contradictions: Sagada's
rituals, the Guimaras oil spill, and the perya
(carnival). Friday's pick is a horror film by Khavn,
Three Days of Darkness, while Saturday showcases short
student works from UP and UST-based film
organizations.

19 February (Monday)
FLIP SHORTS
(Films by Fil-American Directors)
Michael Sandoval, and Keith Sicat

20 February (Tuesday)
Tudla Productions: DAANG BAKAL

To be presented by Jewel Maranan

Daang Bakal (24:10 mins.)
A video-documentary on the devastation brought about
by the Philippine National Railways Modernization and
Rehabilitation Program to the lives and livelihood of
thousands of urban poor residents living alongside the
railroad tracks. The persistence of the situation that
has forced people to reside along the PNR's tracks and
face demolition attempts points to how the national
government's road to progress remains a "danger zone"
for the marginalized.

21 February (Wednesday)
CHABET'S CHOICE

John Walter and Andrew Moore: HOW TO DRAW A BUNNY

HOW TO DRAW A BUNNY (90 mins.)
A documentary on the life of Ray Johnson, pioneer
mail-art and performance artist, who committed suicide
in early 1995. Famous for his trademark "bunny"
signature, Johnson made his name primarily as a
producer of abstract paintings and collages built on
iconic images from the pop culture world around him.

The film provides a generous sampling of Johnson's
work, along with interviews with counterculture
friends and supporters who often seem more bizarre and
"out there" than Johnson himself reportedly was. The
film faces self-imposed limits on just how revelatory
it can end up being.

22 February (Thursday)
SINEKALYE 3 - NEW DOCS

Joy Domingo: PERYA
Ruel Bimuyag and Tommy Hafalla: SEDEY
Ligaya Domingo: Perya

Sedey (documentary/ 30min./ video/ 2007)
Sedey is a private ritual made by the ammam-a (council
of elders) of Sagada where they visit, repair and
clean the old camps used by their ancestors to secure
the boundaries of Sagada and protect its umili
(people). The performance of the Sedey has no exact
schedule, it is only done when a community suffering
is attributed to ancestral spirits to be fed and
visited

HUNA-HUNA (by Wilfred Galila/ documentary/ 7min./
video/ 2006)
Meaning consciousness in Hiligaynon, Huna-huna is an
advocacy for Mother Earth battling with the
nightmarish effects of the oil spill disaster in
Guimaras. It attempts to extend more conscious efforts
to do something about the tragedy. Part of the omnibus
film project Guimaras: Films from the Oil Spill.

PERYA (Sneak Preview)
by Ligaya Domingo/ documentary/ 30min./ video/ 2007

Perya, or as in the easiest way we can associate with
any word, the 'carnival' but not quite. Yes, perya
with its binggo bazaar, tangaan, ferry's wheel and
cotton candies not to mention the mugs and
a-plate-a-peso shot at the tanggaan. Where did the
magic go? Probably gone with the Fiesta Carnival as
soon as Enchanted kingdom came. Then again where is
the live chicken-eating man or the fire-eating man or
the serena? Perya is a documentary about a group of
peryante (people working in perya). Where they move
from one town to another to another as they scrounge
their ways through the very travels of beginnings and
endings of every new site of every new fiesta that
presides their presence Every new site is just another
splendor. Every new site just another backyard for
just another night.

23 February (Friday)
Khavn: THREE DAYS OF DARKNESS (Tatlong Araw Ng
Kadiliman)

Liza, Shereen, & Mika are trapped inside their house
when the apocalyptic prophecy happens. Khavn draws on
the Book of Revelation for one of the most frightening
phenomenon prophesied to happen. Three girls are
trapped in their home as the Three Days of Darkness
descend on the Earth and they must cope and try to
fend off the demons that have come to take them. A
chilling vision of God's Wrath or of people imposing
God's Wrath on one another, the film frightens with
its questions as much as it does with its visuals.

Saturday Night FEEver: UP Gets Banned

“Long Live Philippine Cinema!” by multi-award winning independent film director Raya Martin made its debut at the recently concluded 2007 International Film Festival of Rotterdam, together with his feature-length film Autohystoria and shorts Life Projections, and Rambling From the Sea. He also received the seventh Prince Claus Fund Film Grant for the CineMart 2007 Project Independencia (Cinematografica Independiente en Filipinas, Philippines).

The 2004 Cinemanila International Film Festival’s Ishmael Bernal Awardee for Young Cinema and recipient of the best documentary prize at the 2005 .MOV Film Festival, Martin’s “Long Live Philippine Cinema!” is a burlesque, harsh satire about the mistress of Philippine film production, the Chinese-Filipino producer Mother Lily. She is hated and feared, but nobody can get round her. Fortunately this young filmmaker has thought up an adequate solution to keep Philippine cinema alive. Mother Lily is not a metaphorical invention. She really exists - for now.

Seeking alternative venues by which indie films and music can be appreciated by a wide audience, indie production company Banned Movies Pilipinas and the University Student Council- UP Diliman (USC-UPD) have joined forces to bring indie cinema to the annual UP Fair, a weeklong event which draws thousands of students, professionals and alumni to the UP Sunken Garden. “UP NOT FAIR SALE” highlights the continuing campaign against the commercialization of education and condemns the recent approval of tuition and other fee increases.

“Saturday Night FEEver: UP Gets Banned” also showcases the short films of award-winning independent filmmakers John Torres (“Salat”), Khavn dela Cruz (“Institusyon ng Makata”), Jobin Ballesteros (“The Ballad of Mimiong’s Minion”), Janus Victoria (“Hopia Express”), and Seymour Barros Sanchez and Ginalyn Dulla (“Lababo”). The event also features performances by major acts Sugar Free, Brownman Revival, Slapshock, Moonstar88, and Itchyworms together with rising indie bands Taggu nDios, Severo, Bored of Trustees and Rinka Collective, and many others.

“Long Live Philippine Cinema” will make its Philippine premiere at 9:30 pm on February 17, Saturday, at the UP Sunken Garden. All the other films will run from 5:30 to 6:45 pm.

ROME AND JULIET screening

Rome & Juliet

A different kind of date movie on Valentine's Day!

Seeking to offer diversity in Philippine Cinema, Cinema One Originals treats moviegoers to a different kind of date movie when the digital film, Rome and Juliet opens on February 14 at the IndieSine Theater of Robinsons Galleria Movieworld.

Starring Mylene Dizon and Andrea del Rosario as straight women who plunge into unconventional affairs, this indie gem directed by Connie Macatuno revolves around the idea "Love knows no rules." It traces the unpredictable romantic journey of two women and confronts issues concerning taboo affairs and sexual norms.

When Juliet (del Rosario), a conservative pre-school teacher hires Rome (Dizon), a liberated wedding planner for her nuptials, they become close and develop a romance that becomes a huge scandal after the groom (Rosell) and their families discover their affair. Not long after, Juliet is driven away by her parents and becomes victim of an accident that puts her in a coma. Together, Rome and Juliet face and
withstand the trials that come with their unconventional relationship.

During the 2006 Cinema One Originals Digital Movie Festivals last November, Rome & Juliet brought home the important awards such as Best Production Design for Gerry Santos' wonderful and realistic setting and the Best Actress Award for Mylene Dizon. The film was also selected to have an exhibition at the New York International
Independent Film and Video Festival for this year. It received excellent reviews from the selection panel because of its very good image quality, solid story and believable performances.

Rome & Juliet also stars Rafaell Rosell, Miko Palanca, Lui Villaruz, Joshua Deocareza, Glydel Mercado, CJ Mercado and Tessie Tomas.

Embrace diverse realities. Open your mind. Believe that love knows no restrictions and watch Rome and Juliet opening this Valentine's Day exclusively in Robinsons Galleria IndieSine Theater!

Rome & Juliet is produced by Creative Programs Incorporated thru the Cinema One Originals Digital Movie project.

"Beyond IMAHE NASYON"
a behind the scenes documentary
of an omnibus film
2006 / 50 mins / DV
directed by Juan Pula

"WHAT HAPPENED AFTER 1986?"
20 YEARS. 20 FILMS. 20 FILMMAKERS. 1 NATION.

Beyond IMAHE NASYON is a documentary on the making of IMAHE NASYON… a groundbreaking, conceptual omnibus film by 20 alternative filmmakers who were tasked to present their personal visions on national issues. It is underlined by a conceptual question asked by line producers Jon Red & Carol Bunuan Red:

A unique and common element in IMAHE NASYON is rising Indie actor PING
MEDINA who is featured in all the 20 films.

IMAHE NASYON WILL HAVE ITS REGULAR RUN ON FEB.21-27

isang natatanging musical number. Kaya ano pang inaantay niyo?

NCCA screenings

Resident NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) film scholar/historian Teddy Co plays movie-mix-master- DJ on February 13, Tuesday at the NCCA in Intramuros by programming a potent, evil twin bill of the celebrated hidden classic TERROR IS A MAN, directed by legendary national artist filmmaker Gerardo de Leon, and the more recent internationally- acclaimed feature SA ILALIM NG COGON, directed
by Rico Maria Ilarde. TERROR screens at 1PM, while COGON follows at 3PM. Admission is FREE.

Gerardo de Leon, affectionately referred to as "Manong Gerry" within the industry, is the only director in the Philippines to have won the FAMAS Award for Best Director three consecutive times: in 1960, 1961 and 1962. He is also the most-awarded director in the history of the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences: 7 awards. Despite dabbling in the cinematographic field of the "genre film," de
Leon is renowned for creating some of the most finely-crafted Filipino films of his or of any era. A lasting testament to his legacy is that a number of his films have been extensively distributed and released on video around the world.

SA ILALIM NG COGON, meanwhile, is the very first Filipino film in history to win Best Picture at an international fantastic film festival (2005 Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre, Argentina). It competes again this March in South America in the capital of Uruguay, the city of Montevideo.

While at the NCCA, take a magical mystery tour through Cannes Film Festival-winning filmmaker Raymond Red's splendid exhibit/installatio n KAMERA OBSCURA. Enjoy all the attractions during NCCA's Philippine Arts Festival!

The Classic (Keulraesik)
(2003-South Korea) - Jae-young Kwak
Cast: Son Ye-Jin, Cho Seung-Woo, Cho In-Sung
127 mins. In Korean with English subtitles

Ji-hyae (Son Ye-jin of Chihwaseon) is a shy college student who has a crush
on theater student Sang-min (Jo In-seong). Unfortunately, her friend
Soo-gyung (Lee Sang-in) has already begun dating the guy. Ji-hyae helps her
friend compose romantic e-mails to Sang-min and sometimes socializes with
them, but feels like a third wheel. Sang-min seems to like her, but
Soo-gyung insists that it's only because Ji-hyae is her friend. Ji-hyae is
clearing out her family's home when she finds a box of love letters and an
old journal and begins reading about her mother, Sung Joon-hee (also played
by Son), the granddaughter of a wealthy politician, and her forbidden
dalliance with Oh Joon-ha (Cho Seung-woo of Chunhyang), a poor boy from the
same hometown. The two developed a romantic infatuation, but Joon-hee's
father had already planned for her to marry Tae-soo (Lee Gi-woo), the son of
a business associate. The situation grew more complicated when Tae-soo
befriended Joon-ha at school, and asked his help in winning over Joon-hee.
This tale is intercut with Ji-hyae's story, set in the present day.

Film on National Artist Arturo Luz

In fitting commemoration of the National Arts Month, the UP Film Institute screens Ricky Orellana's documentary on National Artist Arturo Luz this Friday, 9 February 2007, at 5 p.m.

Entitled Lines of Vision, the film sketches a portrait of Arturo Luz through the medium of several voices. Dubbed as "a filmwork designed in the manner of a Luz painting," the Black Soup production with support from the Committee on Art Galleries of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts evokes "simple lines, vibrant relationships, and an unwavering sensitivity to its subject."

Lines of Vision leads a special selection of distinct screenings for the UP Film Institute Videotheque this February. It will be followed by Obrang Di Tapos-Rembrandt Vocalan's short film on National Artist Botong Francisco and Signed: Lino Brocka-the celebrated 1987 documentary by Christian Blackwood that won the Peace Film Award at Berlin.

Succeeding Fridays will respectively feature The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl (Feb 16 Fri 5 p.m.) and National Artist Lamberto Avellana's film version of National Artist Nick Joaquin's A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino starring National Artist Daisy Avellana (Feb 23 Fri 5 p.m.).

Synopsis:
A 30-year-old frustrated and neurotic orphan leaves the orphanage where he had stayed on to work having turned 18. His goal: to find out the true facts of his birth. Faced with the authorities' refusal to give him his dossier, he burgles the social welfare office and discovers the terrifying truth: He was found in a bin, probably dumped by his parents. Unable to accept this version he concocts another somewhat more fabulous scenario: His parents had fallen victim to a Mafia plot. He had been kidnapped and dumped in a garbage chute. Today, his parents are still alive, they need his help!

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
MTRCB R-18 [Strictly For Adults Only]
What are the critics saying about COMPOUND?

Edward Jordon, V.P. of Acquisitions, Film-Source Co.:
COMPOUND is a complex thriller that brilliantly reinvents itself as
the story unfolds. Just when you think you know where the movie is
going, the writer/director pulls the rug out from under you. This is
definitely a most auspicious debut from Will Fredo. His images will
remain with you for a long time.

Cleveland International Film Festival:
A stunning visual achievement, COMPOUND is a contemporary thriller
that deals with the complexities of love, wealth, and fear. A
perfectly unexpected and well-executed ending make this a film not to
be missed.

Tito Genova Valiente, Business Mirror:
"Compound" is not a film easy to love, and yet it is not a film easy
to hate. One thing is sure: it is not a film that can be dismissed
easily.
...The film allows us a peek into a middle-class paranoia...
There is, perhaps, no other Filipino film that approaches what
Christian Metz, the film semiotician, called the "aggregate, plural
property" of cinema as a medium than this film entitled "Compound.

Paul Daza, Philippine Daily Inquirer:
" MELROSE PLACE " As seen through the unflinching eyes of David Lynch
and Mike de Leon.
The movie's technical aspects, especially the lighting, camerawork,
sound and editing, are first-rate.
Also worthy of mention is the theme song of Bob Aves and Grace Nono,
which underscores the characters' mournful inability to find love and
happiness.

Joe Bilancio, Program Director, Reel Affirmations International Film
Festival:
COMPOUND is an independent gem. Well acted, well directed, and
inventive storytelling. Somehow Fredo and the cast are able to make
the film both plot driven AND character driven, a difficult feat for
any cast and crew.

David Corpuz, Mental Pornography:
While our minds are secured that we already knew the ending, we were
goddamn wrong. We're screwed. The director played with our mind and
he won.

The compound is the microcosm of the world we are living in. In the
compound, it's like every society's issue is present: drug addiction,
terrorism, homosexuality, greed for power and wealth, ignorance .. you
name it, it's in here.

Arcilla and Macapagal are noteworthy in their performances as
Virgilio and Jay, respectively. They deserve acting nominations, or
probably the trophy itself!
Rito Asilo, Philippine Daily Inquirer:

Arcilla and Macapagal are passionate actors with contrasting acting
styles, which work for their respective characters, but Diño and Chu
come up with the most informed performances in the ensemble --
particularly the former, who should get more roles in mainstream features.

Singaporean Program
Featuring Martyn See’s SINGAPORE REBEL and SPEAKERS’ CORNERED
To Be Presented by Nai Rui Chng

Martyn See is a Singaporean filmmaker most famous for making the 26-minute documentary film Singapore Rebel, about Dr. Chee Soon Juan, the leader of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Before this he has worked as editor on the movie Mee Pok Man and the documentary Samurai: Behind the Blade.

In March 2005, government movie censors ordered the withdrawal of his film from the Singapore International Film Festival. See was put under police investigation by the Singapore government, and threatened with prosecution under the Films Act, requiring him to surrender his video camera, taped footage of the documentary and materials related to the production. See could face up to two years in jail or a fine of up to S$100,000.

Martyn See is now currently making a new 49 minute documentary on Singapore's ex-political prisoner Said Zahari, who spent a total of 17 years in detention without trial.

Richie Quirino and Collis Davis: PINOY JAZZ
The Story of Jazz in the Philippines

(The screening of PINOY JAZZ will be followed by a
Johnny Alegre Trio performance with open jam)

“Whatever it is you choose to play, don’t lose the Filipino soul.”
Lito Molina

Based on Richie Quirino’s book, Pinoy Jazz Traditions, which won the 2004 National Book Award in the music category, PINOY JAZZ is a 58-minute video documentary that provides the first-ever documentation of the development of jazz in the Philippines, from its infancy in 1898, when Filipinos were first exposed to Black music performed by African-American soldiers, to its present-day maturity in which musicians are
turning to indigenous sources for inspiration. Incorporating historical still photography, turn-of-the century film footage, maps, old recordings, present-day performances and interviews with veteran and contemporary musicians, the video presents an eye-opening view into an almost-forgotten history of the art of jazz as it developed in the Philippines over the last century.

Mark and Joaquin Misa: SA KABILANG DAKO PROGRAM

San-Pits Productions would like to invite you to SA KABILANG DAKO-- an independent docu-experimental digital film exhibit featuring two inspired works by cousins Marc Misa and Joaquin Misa. The featured short films are:

LARO SA QUIAPO (20 minutes)
Laro Sa Quiapo is a glimpse into a day in the life of urban poor children who have made Quiapo their playground. Quiapo is associated with the Black Nazarene, amulet and herbal medicine vendors, fortune tellers, and cheap DVDs in the Muslim quarter. Nick Joaquin once called it the armpit of Manila, for indeed, the filth and stench of the streets of Quiapo make it a harsh environment in which to grow up. Some children, however, have managed to claim this piece of earth to have something like childhood.

Directed by Joaquin Misa
Edited by Marc Misa

EYE CANDY POETRY
(30 minutes)
Eye Candy Poetry is the beat of the city. These experimental short films are created with the muddled dispositions and inspirations that roam the streets of Manila and its people. With several different rivers of undertones, each image or segment is free to be interpreted by the viewer according to whatever he or she experiences it to be. Using a particular recipe of camera techniques and playful editing, Eye Candy
Poetry manifests a flavor of its own and utilizes this taste to fascinate, haunt, or even pleasure the visual palette of the audience. Eye Candy Poetry is a continuous endeavor that will always evolve according to the tides of experience and thought.

Created by Marc Misa and Adelle Victoria.

Ditsi Carolino: RILES
(Philippines/Documentary/2002/Digital/70 mins)

From the first astonishing shots of men, women and children casually moving their belongings from the railroad tracks seconds in front of an onrushing train, Ditsi Carolino makes the viewer feel completely at home in what should be the most alien of environments. Focused on a couple, the film settles into the rhythm of life along the tracks in Manila with an intimacy that never feels intrusive. RILES is a humbling and indelible portrait of human dignity, resilience and community.

Strictly for Adults

Recounted in flashback to a group of railway travellers, the story wryly
details the romantic perils of Mathieu, a wealthy, middle-aged French
sophisticate who falls desperately in love with his 19-year-old former
chambermaid Conchita. Thus begins a surreal game of sexual cat-and-mouse,
with Mathieu obsessively attempting to win the girl's affections as she
manipulates his carnal desires, each vying to gain absolute control of the
other.

A young boy's fascination with the deaths of several people close to him
sparks his growth from boyhood in this Spanish drama. The story takes place
during a vacation to the hometown of nine-year-old Javi and his brother
Juan's rural farming village in the early 1960s. Their father, they are
told, accidentally killed himself while cleaning his gun, and the room where
the death occurred has been declared off limits to the boys. *Secretos del
corazón* was the winner of four Goya Awards, as well as an Oscar nominee for
Best Foreign Language Film.

La virgen de la lujuria

Strictly for Adults

Mexican director Arturo Ripstein's incredibly lush melodrama *The Virgin of
Lust* makes an ironic statement about a fundamental delusion in the hopes of
Communists to lift up the masses. Set mostly in a café in Vera Cruz, the
film centers upon Nacho (Luis Felipe Tovar), an unambitious worker who one
fateful night finds Lola, a mysterious and promiscuous political radical who
lives so far on the edge that she always seems on the threat of
self-destruction. Nacho, who is hopelessly attracted to her but too afraid
to act upon his impulses, takes her in, and soon the two find themselves in
a masochistic relationship.

En la ciudad

Directed by Cesc Gay

Mónica López, Eduard Fernández, Leonor Watling, María Pujalte, Alex
Brendemühl, Vicenta N'Dongo, Chisco Amado

In Spanish with English subtitles.

Date: February 24
Time: 6:00 pm
Venue: Instituto Cervantes

Strictly for Adults

A movie depicting a sincere portrait of urban life in Barcelona. The story
moves around six friends whose sentimental lives are masked with hidden
relationships, fear in expressing sentiments, secrets and lies. Mario is a
serious architect married to Sara who keeps a secretive romance with a
colleague. Mario suspects it, but does not dare to speak about it. Irene and
Manu, on the other hand, seem to be a happy couple, but the truth is that
Irene is like a turtle succumbed in its shell and hides her feelings. Sofía
lives alone who fantasizes realities out of her dreams. And finally, Tomás
who also keeps a secret of a passionate adventure with a young girl. The
film boasts of a magnificent script and great performances by its actors
like Eduard Fernández who won two Best Supporting Actor Awards in Goya (the
Spanish Oscars) and in Spanish Actors Union. But the real standout here is
María Pujalte, as a sensitive woman addicted to romance.
