"A film that adapts the basic Russian Classic and then breaks away in moreways than just the setting"
- Martha Barber of Miami Herald
" Its lush feel and affectionate tone are a movie-loving Francophile's dreamcome true. "
- E!

When the young and overly sensitive filmmaker Julien screens his new DVart-film starring his girlfriend Lili--a sexy young local girl--to hisfamous actress mother Mado, and her lover Brice, an accomplished filmdirector, an unraveling of the delicate peace in their house begins. Thegraceful beauty Lili, who dreams of becoming a famous actress like Mado, isimmediately fascinated by Brice, who gladly falls prey to her charms. Lili'sambitions will stop at nothing and she soon seduces Brice into leaving Madoto take her to Paris so she can become a movie actress. Mado and Julien areleft to pick up the pieces of their disrupted lives, and for Julien the lossis almost fatal. Five years later, Julien, now a more established filmmaker, remakes a fictionalized account of this disastrous love quadrangle, whichnearly destroyed him. He reunites the characters--based on Mado, Brica andLili--in his first, highly autobiographical, feature film. In real life,Lili is no longer with Brice, but indeed, she has become a famous actress. When she learns of Julien's new film, and that it's about that tempestuoussummer of five years past, she tries to reconnect with him.

Synopsis:
Abdel Kechiche's second feature, after the celebrated BLAME IT ON VOLTAIRE, firmly establishes the actor-turned-director as a major presence in world cinema. A grittily realistic portrait of life in a downtrodden Parisian housing project, GAMES OF LOVE AND CHANCE exhilaratingly captures the tumultuous ups-and-downs of adolescence. Krimo (Osman Elkharraz) is a tough-minded teenager who yearns for the day when his father will be released from prison. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Krimo begins to fall for the luminous Lydia (Sara Forestier), who he has known his whole life but has only begun to see in a romantic light. In order to get closer to Lydia, Krimo risks humiliation by joining the cast of the school play, an adaptation of Marivaux's A GAME OF LOVE AND CHANCE. The torment inflicted upon Krimo by the flirtatious Lydia is enough to make any kid crazy, but add a jealous ex-girlfriend and a neighborhood bully into the mix and his life seems downright impossible.

Shocking France by winning four Cesar Awards (including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Female Newcomer).
