Mission Against Terror screening

CINEKATIPUNAN
June 25, 5-6:30 PM

Mission Against Terror
48 mins | Documentary

Five Cuban men are in prison for being anti-terrorists
in the country that declared war against terror.

Cuba has every right to protect its country and people
from ultra-right groups in Miami that have killed
scores in their island right under the US government’s
nose. So were known terrorists at large in Miami
monitored by Cuban patriots, who also passed
information to US authorities. Could there have been a
mix up? Instead of the terrorists, the anti-terrorists
were abducted and locked up.

The Cuban Five (Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino,
Fernando González, René González and Antonio Guerrero)
were illegally held in US jails since 1998 and denied
family visits and bail after almost two years of being
in solitary confinement. Lawyer Leonard Weinglass
calls this case a political one, and a “violation”
from the start.

“Mission Against Terror” maps Cuba ’s 48-year struggle
against terrorism and the clamor for the freedom of
Cuban 5. Its use of historic footage and interviews
with experts and families of the accused make moving
portraits of the Cuban patriots and elusive justice in
the US .

Bernie Dwyer and Roberto Ruiz collaborated on this
critically acclaimed Irish-Cuban documentary that
debuted at Havana ’s 26th Festival of New Latin
American Cinema in December 2004.

Following the film, former political prisoner and
member of the FREE THE CUBAN FIVE Committee of Amistad
(Philippines- Cuba Friendship Association) Donato
Continente will present on the issue and inform on how
individuals can become involved. Cuban Ambassador H.E.
Jorge Rey Jimenez is also invited to give his remarks.

HAW-ANG screenings

HAW-ANG: Indie film in the heritage of beauty

Set in the majestic rice terraces, Haw-Ang (English title: Before
Harvest) is a new indie film advocating children's right to quality
education, empowerment of women, and welfare of our indigenous
countrymen. It tells the story of Sister Adel, a light-hearted young
nun who goes to a farming village in Ifugao to teach catechism and
eventually build a schoolhouse. As she breaks the traditions of the
tribe, she will make a big difference in the little lives of its
people especially that of Dacmay, a seven-year-old rowdy girl in
search of her lost mother's love. At the same time, Sister Adel will
finally discover her real mission in life.

This is a poignant story of friendship and love that transcends ages,
cultures, and beliefs. A tale that is at times comic and inevitably
tragic, this is a film about being a woman, and more importantly,
being human. It all begins in the time of preparing rice paddies for
planting, in that season of hopes and dreams called "haw-ang."

Produced by Sizzling Gambas Productions, Inc. and co-presented by
UniversiTV, Haw-Ang marks the directorial debut of Bong Ramos, a
seasoned writer-line producer for television and movies. The role of
Sister Adel is played by Kalila Aguilos (Sa North Diversion Road,
Ligalig, Inang Yaya), a veteran theater and indie film actress. The
film features a support cast that includes Neil Ryan Sese (Ang
Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros) and PBB Season 1 ex-housemate Racquel
Reyes. Haw-Ang also proudly brings to the world of cinema the talent
of Dacmay Tangliban (who plays Dacmay) and the other Ifugao children
of the Tuwali tribe.

Haw-Ang will have its World Premiere at the 3rd Cinemalaya Philippine
Independent Film Festival on July 26, 2007 at the CCP. The film is set
for nationwide commercial release at SM Digital Cinemas on August 8,
2007, and will also enter the international film festival circuit very
soon.

Brocka's Tinimbang and forum on leprosy

Many people think that leprosy no longer exists. But it does. Many people think that leprosy is not curable, but it is.

Yet misguided notions about leprosy and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy persist. Even today, millions of men, women and children continue to suffer social, economic and legal discrimination, simply because they or a familymember have or have had leprosy.

Leprosy, among the world's oldest recorded diseases, still exists in many countries. But while less than 300,000 people develop leprosy each year, an estimated 100 million must deal with cruel discrimination because of their association with the disease, many spending their lives completely isolated from society.

On June 16, 2-5:30 pm at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Dream Theater, these issues will be discussed through a film showing and Forum on Leprosy and its Representations.

The forum starts at 2pm with a screening of Lino Brocka's Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974, 35mm, 128 mins. Color Filipino with English subtitles), the late director's film that depicts the story of a young boy growing up in a small town and his friendship with the village idiot and a person affected by leprosy.

A panel discussion led by API fellows Nick de Ocampo (film) and Jess Santiago (music) and University of the Philippines professor Dr. Eufracio Abaya will follow the screening. Discussions will revolve around representations of leprosy in film and anthropological issues related to suffering and illnesses.

The forum is organized by Asian Public Intellectuals (API) Fellowship, which is administered by the Nippon Foundation, chaired by Yohei Sasakawa, the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for the Elimination of Leprosy.

The forum is a related activity of trauma, interrupted, an international exhibition on trauma, art and healing curated by API fellow and University of the Philippines professor Flaudette May V. Datuin. Exploring the links between art, healing and a range of traumas, including those brought about by stigma, illnesses, disasters, sexual abuse, and other forms of violence and human rights violations, the exhibit will be on show at CCP Main Gallery, Third and Fourth Floor hallways from June 14 to July 29, 2007, daily, from 10 am to 6pm, except Mondays and holidays. Admission to these activities is free and open to the public.

FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

Cinema 3 Shangri La Cineplex
June 8-17
FREE ADMISSION

LIST OF FILMS:

Arthur and the Invisibles (2006) by Luc Besson
Animation/Adventure/Family/Fantasy
Ten-year-old Arthur, in a bid to save his grandfather's house from being demolished, goes looking for some much-fabled hidden treasure in the land of the Minimoys, a tiny people living in harmony with nature.

Fair Play (2006) by Lionel Bailliu
Thriller
Even if I am French, I am not a fanatical "french cinema lover". I think that too often french directors have more pretensions than real abilities. But, Fair Play is really a good film for those who, like me, have had difficult relationships in their job environment. Things are a little bit "over the top" in this movie, for sure. But the actors are so good... Give it a try, if you want to see how intelligence can mesh today with satirical criticism. Eric Savin is a real "ego monster" cruel and seductive. Benoit Magimel is without a doubt one of the more promising young french actors. Marion Cotillard gives a great performance too, playing a complex secretary, half shy and fearful, half aggressive and selfish. And, of course, Lionel Bailiu knows how to film. He does it like an entomologist watching his poor creatures fighting against the harshness of a meaningless existence.

Gamblers (2005) by Frederic Balekdjian
Crime Drama
Vahé, Sahak, and Toros run a bonneteau game on the streets of Paris. They're Lebanese French. Vahé also works with his father, a cloth merchant, and is in love with Lu Ann, Chinese French, who's broken off their affair. Vahé wants to make things right: with Lu Ann, with his father's business, and with Yuen, Lu Ann's younger brother, who's on the edge of delinquency and owes money to the gang who arranged his passage from China. Vahé tries to be like a father to Yuen, teaching him a work ethic. When Yuen impetuosity puts his own life in jeopardy, Vahé tries to save him. Are Vahé's impulses and hopes to die on the streets of Paris?

March of the Penguins (2005) by Luc Jacuet
Documentary
A look at the annual journey of Emperor penguins as they march -- single file -- to their traditional breeding ground.

Not There to be Loved (2005) by Stephane Brize
Comedy Drama Music Romance
Jean-Claude is 51 and weary. Since his divorce he has been leading a lonely, cheerless life. His job does not help him. Indeed, as a "huissier de justice" his everyday task consists in bringing despair into the homes of those who can't pay their rent, announcing eviction and/or property seizure. His depressing Sunday afternoons are invariably spent in the retirement home of his old father, a sour, never-satisfied pain in the neck. A glimmer of hope could come from the dance studio across his office. This is a place specializing in tango lessons. One day, Jean-Claude decides to enroll. There, he meets charming young Françoise and both click. The trouble is that Françoise is about to marry.

OSS 117 (2006) by Michel Hazanavicius
Adventure / Comedy
Secret agent OSS 117 is stupid, but at least he sort of knows it, whereas I've always found that James Bond was stupid but acted like a smart arse. Dialogue is witty with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour that one would expect from a British rather than a French movie. The women and the music are beautiful. A refreshing trip into the past, when the bad guys were ex-Nazis or Soviet brutes, cars were shiny, and France had colonies!

Sequins (2004) by Eleanore Faucher
Drama
When Claire learns that she is five months pregnant at the tender age of 17, she decides to give birth anonymously. She finds refuge with Madame Melikian, an embroiderer for haute couture designers. And, day by day, stitch by stitch, as Claire's belly grows rounder, the threads of embroidery create a filial bond between them.

The Ax (2005) by Costa-Gavras
Comedy Crime Drama Thriller
The thirty-nine years old executive Bruno Davert has been working for fifteen years in a paper company. After a merging operation with a Romania's company, he is fired in a downsizing. While unemployed for two years, Bruno loses his self-esteem and sanity and his family loses the middle-class lifestyle without cable television, Internet and regular consumption. He concludes that there is too much competition in his sector for a few job positions and decides to literally eliminate his competitors, killing those more qualified than him.

The Little Lieutenant (2005) by Xavier Beauvois
Crime Drama
When a fresh young police academy graduate from provincial Le Havre volunteers for the high pressure world of the Parisian homicide squad, his schoolteacher wife is reluctant to go with him. He moves into a rooming house that caters to single cops as he embraces his fellow officers as an extended family. He becomes close to an Arab officer and his boss, a very professional but lonely, middle-aged female detective who is also a recovering alcoholic. Routine police procedure gives way to an intensive search among the city's homeless for an undocumented Russian immigrant who may be responsible for a series of violent crimes.

Perfume: Story of a Murderer (2006) by Tom Tykwer
Crime Drama Thriller
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born in the stench of eighteenth century Paris, develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he tries to preserve scents in the search for the ultimate perfume.
