"ICU Bed # 7" at IndieSine on January 31
Finally, Pinoy film buffs will have a chance to watch Rica Arevalo's "ICU Bed # 7" on January 31 to February 6 at IndieSine, Robinson's Galleria. It stars the multi-awarded Eddie Garcia in the title role of Lolo Joseph, the stubborn and loud-mouthed patriarch, whose illness tears his two daughters (Irma Adlawan and Angel Aquino) to make a decision whether to end or prolong his life. This searing drama earned for Garcia his first Cinemalaya award as Best Actor.
First shown at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), "ICU Bed # 7" tackles universal themes like forgiveness, acceptance, healing and renewal viewed within the context of a middle-class family coping with the pains of illness. Providing
support are seasoned stage and TV actors like Nonie Buencamino, Rito Asilo, Andy Bais, Reema Chanco, Happee Sy and Arvin Viola.
Based on Arevalo's Palanca award-winning screenplay, the 100-minute digital film produced by Mediarevolution in cooperation with the Indie Filmmakers Cooperative will have a one-week run at the newly launched IndieSine---the only theater supporting works by talented independent mavericks.
ICU is a proud Cinemalaya winner for Best Direction and Best Actor; 2006 Star Awards for Film nominee for Best Digital Film, Digital Director of the Year, Best Actor and graded "B" by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

SEROKS screening
Ledge Productions and the UP Cineastes’ Studio invite you to watch CinemaOne Originals’ “SEROKS” on January 30, 2007, at the UP Cine Adarna, 5pm and 7:30pm.
The digital movie written and directed by Ed Lejano, makes use of the film noir style and fuses elements of the thriller,in conveying a recurring pattern of duplication that reflect the film's title.
Set in the vibrant world of Recto, Juliana Palermo plays the mysterious woman who moves into a boarding houseabove a xerox shop. Her femme fatale character soon encounters the xerox operator played by Neil Ryan Sese (who portrayed one of the brothers in Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros).
Their fateful meeting triggers a series of duplicating events. This ushers the film's unpredictable plotdevelopments as it branches out to involve the other offbeat characters that inhabit the world of " SEROKS".

In the decade following the Spanish-American War, more Filipinos were killed by US troops than by the Spanish during the 300 years of colonial rule. More than 1
million Filipinos died between 1899 and 1913. Yet few remember any details of the war or why it was fought, though the war's history holds the key to twentieth
century US foreign policy in Southeast Asia. This experimental documentary about the Philippine-American war of 1899 combines archival photographs and turn-of-the-century film, digital video and 16mm film footage to create memories of a forgotten history. A contemporary Filipina-American narrator weaves this complex history through historiography, experimental documentary and intercultural cinema. Shot on location in the Philippines and edited in the US, MEMORIES OF A FORGOTTEN WAR was produced by an international team of Filipino and American film and media artists.

BAYANING 3RD WORLD at IndieSine
Special One-Day screening of Mike de Leon's Bayaning 3rd World at IndieSine
Daluyan Awardee Mike de Leon created a masterpiece six long years ago. The few people who have seen it still remember de Leon's post-modern take on a bygone obsession of the centennial fever: the great Filipino hero, Jose Rizal.
Mike de Leon puts his characters, a director (Ricky Davao) and a writer (Cris Villanueva) on the verge of a creating a great Rizal film, on a historical adventure that unravels the various stories, true and false, about the controversial national hero. How you may ask, is it possible to make a compelling film within a film about a textbook case like Jose Rizal? "Bayaning 3rd World" both educates and dazzles under one of the greatest Filipino filmmakers of all time.
The Independent Filmmakers Cooperative (IFC) is proud to present a special ONE-DAY SCREENING of Bayaning 3rd World at IndieSine, Robinsons Galleria on January 25. Bayaning 3rd World will have five screenings on that day.
The IFC is a new organization of filmmakers that provides services to its members—from production to distribution. IFC is mainly a support and network system for indies who need help with their movies. IFC is open to all practicing filmmakers. All film practitioners who have been part of an indie film production are invited to apply.

Synopsis:
Abdel Kechiche's second feature, after the celebrated BLAME IT ON VOLTAIRE, firmly establishes the actor-turned-director as a major presence in world cinema. A grittily realistic portrait of life in a downtrodden Parisian housing project, GAMES OF LOVE AND CHANCE exhilaratingly captures the tumultuous ups-and-downs of adolescence. Krimo (Osman Elkharraz) is a tough-minded teenager who yearns for the day when his father will be released from prison. After breaking up with his girlfriend, Krimo begins to fall for the luminous Lydia (Sara Forestier), who he has known his whole life but has only begun to see in a romantic light. In order to get closer to Lydia, Krimo risks humiliation by joining the cast of the school play, an adaptation of Marivaux's A GAME OF LOVE AND CHANCE. The torment inflicted upon Krimo by the flirtatious Lydia is enough to make any kid crazy, but add a jealous ex-girlfriend and a neighborhood bully into the mix and his life seems downright impossible.

KHAVN'S "SINEMARAHAS" PREMIERES AT GALLERIA
Khavn's latest feature "SINEMARAHAS" will premiere this January 23, Tuesday, 9pm at the INDIE SINE in Robinson's Galleria as part of the BAGONG AGOS FESTIVAL.
"SINEMARAHAS" is a jam-packed peek into Khavn's cosmos of extremity, which ranges from social realism to post-surrealism, unflinchingly depicting ultra-violence in its many forms, beginning with poverty, its "worst form," according to Gandhi.
Khavn is the festival director of .MOV, the first digital film festival in the Philippines. With his digital film production company Filmless Films, he has
directed 16 full-length films and more than 60 short films, several of which have won in the Philippines, Japan, Germany, Spain, Italy, Brazil, and Canada.

Having taken up the challenge of a friendly soccer match, 3 soccer crazy boys realise that it is not easy to find a good, free public soccer field in Singapore… if there's any at all. Through their journey they encounter obnoxious care-takers, locked-up fences, deterring weather and a persistent policeman. Will they be able to find their dream soccer pitch? The story explores the issues of soccer amenities, and the attitudes of Singaporeans
towards local and foreign soccer.
Completely unheralded, Tak Giu debuted on the internet to garner over 32,000 downloads in less than three weeks and quickly gained a cult-following. In 6 months, it had gathered 100,000 viewers. Shot with just a camcorder, Tak Giu spread like wild-fire and made waves in the Singaporean football and online community.
In November 2005, Jacen Tan's 2nd short film, Zo Peng, won 2nd place at the Panasonic/MDA Digital Film Fiesta, Short Film Open Category. Jacen Tan has also
produced and directed Silverpiece, a music video for popular Singaporean indie band, Lunarin.
Jacen's new short film, 'Zo Gang' will hit the internet by the end of 2006. His films can be viewed on his website, Hosaywood and YouTube

Her editing credits range from TV documentaries (Discovery Channel and MediaCorp Arts Central) to reality shows (Ch8 and Ch U), entertainment, infotainment, sports, trailers (AXN, CH 8). She has been actively involved in making short films for many years. A number of short films which she edited won prestigious awards overseas. Moving House (a documentary commissioned by the Discovery Channel) won the Best Documentary in the 2002 Student
Academy Awards (OSCARS). Happy Birthday Sharon (an experimental short film) won the Best Short Film award at the 2nd AFM/International Independent Film Fest in
Istanbul, Turkey 2003.
Ho Choon Hiong's debut documentary Goddess of the Neon City was short-listed as a finalist for Best Short Film in the Singapore International Film Festival. Since then he has produced other notable projects for MediaCorp Arts Central and Discovery Channel.
Ho's new film, I Love Malaya (co-directed with four others) was released in 2006.

Todo Todo Torres: John Gets Banned
On January 20 at 7pm, Banned Movies Pilipinas kicks off the new year at the Freedom Bar in Quezon City with "Todo Todo Torres: John Gets Banned." A cum laude graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University, indie filmmaker John Torres is a recipient of Vancouver's Dragons and Tigers Award, Singapore's Fipresci-Netpac Award, and Cinemanila's 2005 Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema. The event will screen four of his short films, namely, "Tawid Gutom," "Salat," "Paano Kita Liligawan ng 'Di Kumakapit sa 'Yo?" and "Gabi, Nang Nalaman Ko na Ang Aking Ama ay May Anak sa Labas."
Between these 3-12 minute-films, the rawest and freshest local bands will be rocking the scene. Among them are Taggu nDios, Severo, Pumping Pluto, Linch 12, Xeven Thursday, Surfherloverboy, Final Vow, and the Board of Trustees.

A group of idealistic, amateur filmmakers set out to shoot a short comedy called Group Sex in the hopes of attracting major producers and competing in film festivals. Things begin to fall apart when key production members start disappearing for reasons that vary from the mundane to the bizarre. The film documents the group's failure based on extensive preproduction footage shot by the crew.
Jerrold Tarog started as a musician, pounding on the keys all through elementary and banging on the drums from high school to early college. He took his love for music to the next level by studying Music Composition at the University of the Philippines College of Music. He dove deep into the craft, learning about form, textures and colors while simultaneously moving out of it by assimilating rituals into his compositions. As more and more theatrics made their way to his music, a quote by Stanley Kubrick gave what probably was the final push for him to be involved in filmmaking: "Film…should be more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. "Everything changed after that as he began taking film courses along with his music studies. He spent as much time inside the cinema as he did in the listening library. As a result of all these, he is currently a freelance film scorer ("Kubrador," "Twilight Dancers," "Mga Pusang Gala," "Kaleldo,"
"Siquijor: Mystic Island," and "Masahista," among others) while writing, directing, editing and scoring his own digital films in his free time. It's all been short films so far but, with a little luck, he hopes to tackle his first full-length film very soon. Jerrold's pretty sure it's not going to be a musical.

La nuit américaine was director François Truffaut's loving and humorous tribute to the communal insanity of making a movie. The film details the making of a family drama called "Meet Pamela" about the tragedy that follows when a young French man introduces his parents to his new British wife. Truffaut gently satirizes his own films with "Meet Pamela"'s overwrought storyline, but the real focus is on the chaos behind the scenes. One of the central actresses is continually drunk due to family problems, while the other is prone to emotional instability, and the male lead (Truffaut regular Jean-Pierre Leaud) starts to act erratically when his intermittent romance with the fickle script girl begins to fail. In addition to all this personal drama, the film is besieged by technical problems, from difficult tracking shots to stubborn animal actors. The inspiration for future satires of movie-making from Living in Oblivion to Irma Vep.

An intimate look at the making of Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 classic Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse combines the usual documentary interviews with outtakes from the film and rare documentary footage, some shot on the set by Eleanor Coppola. Not long after the arrival of Coppola and crew in the Philippines, the shooting schedule begins spiraling out of control; the film's cost has soon far surpassed the original budget, with the ending still unwritten. As the problems mount, from lead Martin Sheen's heart attack to the disappearance of several helicopters needed for a scene (because they went to fight in nearby war), the making of the film begins to frighteningly resemble its subject - an unending tale of madness and obsession in the jungle. The film provides a remarkably immediate look at the filmmaking process and the personalities involved, especially Coppola, who publicly acts the autocrat but privately proclaims his belief that he is
making an awful film, and Marlon Brando, whose rambling mumble improvisations are among the documentary's highlights. Even more impressively, the documentary explores how, despite the chaotic environment, the filmmakers somehow managed to produce an acclaimed, lasting work of art.

A group of idealistic, amateur filmmakers set out to shoot a short comedy called Group Sex in the hopes of attracting major producers and competing in film festivals. Things begin to fall apart when key production members start disappearing for reasons that vary from the mundane to the bizarre. The film documents the group's failure based on extensive preproduction footage shot by the crew.
Jerrold Tarog started as a musician, pounding on the keys all through elementary and banging on the drums from high school to early college. He took his love for music to the next level by studying Music Composition at the University of the Philippines College of Music. He dove deep into the craft, learning about form, textures and colors while simultaneously moving out of it by assimilating rituals into his compositions. As more and more theatrics made their way to his music, a quote by Stanley Kubrick gave what probably was the final push for him to be involved in filmmaking: "Film…should be more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. "Everything changed after that as he began taking film courses along with his music studies. He spent as much time inside the cinema as he did in the listening library. As a result of all these, he is currently a freelance film scorer ("Kubrador," "Twilight Dancers," "Mga Pusang Gala," "Kaleldo,"
"Siquijor: Mystic Island," and "Masahista," among others) while writing, directing, editing and scoring his own digital films in his free time. It's all been short films so far but, with a little luck, he hopes to tackle his first full-length film very soon. Jerrold's pretty sure it's not going to be a musical.

La nuit américaine was director François Truffaut's loving and humorous tribute to the communal insanity of making a movie. The film details the making of a family drama called "Meet Pamela" about the tragedy that follows when a young French man introduces his parents to his new British wife. Truffaut gently satirizes his own films with "Meet Pamela"'s overwrought storyline, but the real focus is on the chaos behind the scenes. One of the central actresses is continually drunk due to family problems, while the other is prone to emotional instability, and the male lead (Truffaut regular Jean-Pierre Leaud) starts to act erratically when his intermittent romance with the fickle script girl begins to fail. In addition to all this personal drama, the film is besieged by technical problems, from difficult tracking shots to stubborn animal actors. The inspiration for future satires of movie-making from Living in Oblivion to Irma Vep.
Day for Night is included in the book 1001 Movies You Should See Before You Die.

An intimate look at the making of Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 classic Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse combines the usual documentary interviews with outtakes from the film and rare documentary footage, some shot on the set by Eleanor Coppola. Not long after the arrival of Coppola and crew in the Philippines, the shooting schedule begins spiraling out of control; the film's cost has soon far surpassed the original budget, with the ending still unwritten. As the problems mount, from lead Martin Sheen's heart attack to the disappearance of several helicopters needed for a scene (because they went to fight in nearby war), the making of the film begins to frighteningly resemble its subject - an unending tale of madness and obsession in the jungle. The film provides a remarkably immediate look at the filmmaking process and the personalities involved, especially Coppola, who publicly acts the autocrat but privately proclaims his belief that he is
making an awful film, and Marlon Brando, whose rambling mumble improvisations are among the documentary's highlights. Even more impressively, the documentary explores how, despite the chaotic environment, the filmmakers somehow managed to produce an acclaimed, lasting work of art.

The IFC (Independent Filmmakers Cooperative) proudly announces the regular opening of INDIESINE at the Robinson's Galleria to the public. IndieSine is a theater dedicated to alternative movies made by local independent filmmakers. Film enthusiasts now have more movie choices than just the regular movie fare.
IndieSine will offer regular commercial runs and festivals throughout the year. The unique programming creates an interesting mix of various alternative films, new and old, experimental and genre-busting titles, multi-awarded and obscure.
BAGONG AGOS FESTIVAL
To kick off IndieSine, the BAGONG AGOS FESTIVAL will feature some of the most talked about indie movies in the last year. "Huling Balyan Ng Buhi," directed by Sherad Sanchez opens the festival. The film was the 2006 Grand Prize winner of the Cinema One Originals.
Honored guests and leaders in the indie film community are expected to grace the invitational launch on January 16 to cheer on the Daluyan Awardees. The 11 Daluyan Awardees are progressive leaders and pioneers
in the independent film community. The awardees are Ben Pinga, Virgie Moreno, Surf Reyes, Nick de Ocampo, Raymond Red, Roxlee, Tikoy Aguiluz, Mike de Leon,
Mario O. Hara, Ed Cabagnot and Kidlat Tahimik.
The Bagong Agos Festival will run from January 16-24, 2007. IndieSine accepts bulk ticket sales and bookings.

The IFC is a new organization of filmmakers that provides services to its members-from production to distribution. IFC is mainly a support and network system for indies who need help with their movies. IFC is open to all practicing filmmakers. Fleeing their war-torn homeland, forty thousand Algerians come to Montreal, Quebec in the 1990's. Many are refused refugee status and are not allowed to study or work normally. Years go by, children are born and Canada becomes home. Then comes 911. Deportations begin. The "non-status Algerians" decide to fight to stay in Canada. Bledi, This is Our Home follows some of the key actors in a roller-coaster of direct actions, lobbying efforts, victories and setbacks. For the first time in Canadian history, the tradition of sanctuary is violated when Mohamed Cherfi is dragged out of a Quebec City church... then tossed in a U.S. jail. Dramatic and personal, Bledi, This is Our Home raises crucial questions about Canada's refugee policies and its
treatment of Muslims and Arabs.
Profile of Filmmakers
Malcolm Guy is a Montreal-based director/producer of documentaries and fiction films and is President and co-founder of Productions Multi-Monde. In 2004, he directed two feature-length documentaries, Rebel Music Americas (avec Marie Boti) and Turbulent Waters (with Michelle Smith). He has also directed Pressure Point: Inside the Montreal Blockade (1999) (co-directed with Magnus Isacsson and Anna Paskal - Best documentary, L'Association québecoise des critiques de cinéma), The Suit War en 1997 et La montagne d'or (avec William Ging Wee Dere) en 1993. Malcolm has produced Cherry Fruitbread (2003)(audience prize, Best Canadian short film, Festival des films du monde), When Strangers Reunite (1999), Modern Heroes Modern Slaves (1997) (Best documentary, Canadian Association of Journalists), and the feature film L'Oreille d'un sourd (1996). Malcolm is also active in the independent film community and sits on a number of Boards of Directors.
Eylem Kaftan was born in Turkey. Eylem completed a Masters degree in
Cinema at York University in 2002, where she worked as a teaching assistant and wrote her thesis on the identity crisis in post-1980 Turkish cinema. Her first documentary, Faultlines, investigates the aftermath of the earthquake which hit Turkey in 1999. It won Best Short Film and the Jury Prize at the Planet Indie Film Festival in Toronto. Eylem then wrote and directed Vendetta Song (2005) produced with DLI Productions in co-production with the National Film Board of Canada. This gripping hour long documentary about her personal journey into the honor-killing of her aunt in a small Kurdish village in Turkey was broadcast on Vision TV and Télé-Québec and has received several awards including CIDA Prize for Best Canadian Documentary on International Development at Hot Docs; the Quebec Film Critics Association Award for Best Medium Length Documentary; Best Documentary, Calgary International festival; and Best Documentary, Female Eye Film Festival. Eylem has contributed to several Canadian documentaries on social and political issues ranging from immigration and women's rights to mental illness and culture shock. Eylem is presently working on her new documentary on Kurdish youth.

Spotlight on John Duigan
Among performances generating much buzz for this year's Oscars is Penelope Cruz who topbills the latest Pedro Almodovar masterpiece, Volver. If Penelope gets the nomination, it would be quite a milestone for the beauteous actress. As some sort of runup to this year's announcement of Academy nominees on January 23, UP Film Institute screens Head in the Clouds-the 2004 megger by auteur John Duigan pitting Penelope with Academy award-winner Charlize Theron.

Spotlight on John Duigan
Among performances generating much buzz for this year's Oscars is Penelope Cruz who topbills the latest Pedro Almodovar masterpiece, Volver. If Penelope gets the nomination, it would be quite a milestone for the beauteous actress. As some sort of runup to this year's announcement of Academy nominees on January 23, UP Film Institute screens Head in the Clouds-the 2004 megger by auteur John Duigan pitting Penelope with Academy award-winner Charlize Theron.
The film has multiple screenings this January. For the first of such screenings this Saturday, 13 January 2007, at 5 p.m., it will be preceded at 2 p.m. by another John Duigan oeuvre, Wide Sargasso Sea. Catch both films and kindly spread the word to your circle of friends and colleagues.

A dream like film that revolves around the mystery behind a painting, which leads to a brutal rape, and an end that will question what freedom is. Three women of different generations travel through time and space, and experience life’s tragedy.

Filming your own life is a very hard thing to do. It takes a lot of courage and determination in doing such a film. For me, I see it as reel versus real: inside
the reel is the reality of life. And I am very much afraid on the question of how will I be able to convince my audience that what is inside the reel is actually real. Sometimes there could be painful past that can never be easily forgotten due to the big scar it had left. And only time knows when it would totally heal. Packed with much courage and determination, here it is… an emotional story about a person going on a dilemma in trying to heal his never forgotten past. Forgiveness and Acceptance. Matriarchy and Patriarchy. Sorrows and Joys.

This film is about the lives of small-time abortion service providers. Lupe is an
overprotective mother who aborts babies to support her daughter Cristina. Anghel, on the other hand, is Lupe's agent who looks for potential customers and accompanies them to her house. A sudden turn of events happens when Cristina gets pregnant and tries to abort her baby herself.

One-Man Show explores the realizations of a man as he delivers the performance of his life: from the bright lights of his peak as a star until his eventual descent into obscurity. When all the lights of prestige go down, will he cease to believe in himself as well.

Nightmares are something that seems so harmless. It is as if everybody gets nightmares once in a while. But for Helen, an early 30’s woman, her nightmares have been part of her reality. Even as she wants to face her present positively, her
nightmare keeps on haunting her and keeps weighing her down. These recurring nightmares have been memories of her past that she thought she had buried already.
But it keeps on living inside her. How could she finally leave behind this haunting past?

In the decade following the Spanish-American War, more Filipinos were killed by US troops than by the Spanish during the 300 years of colonial rule. More than 1
million Filipinos died between 1899 and 1913. Yet few remember any details of the war or why it was fought, though the war’s history holds the key to twentieth
century US foreign policy in Southeast Asia. This experimental documentary about the Philippine-American war of 1899 combines archival photographs and turn-of-the-century film, digital video and 16mm film footage to create memories of a forgotten history. A contemporary Filipina-American narrator weaves this complex history through historiography, experimental documentary and intercultural cinema. Shot on location in the Philippines and edited in the US, MEMORIES OF A FORGOTTEN WAR was produced by an international team of Filipino and American film and media artists.

Sari Raissa Lluch Dalena-Sicat is a Filipina independent filmmaker living and working in Manila. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Film at New York University under a Fulbright-Hayes scholarship. Her films have been screened
internationally in Asia and the U.S. Her films include Church Dog (1994), Little Crosses (1995), Jamming on an Old Saya (1995) The White Funeral (1997), Attack
Champion (2000), Bullet Days (2001) Divine Wind (Kamikaze) (2001) and Memories of a Forgotten War (2001) co-directed with Camilla Griggers. Sari Dalena was honored as one of the Cultural Center of the Philippine’s 13 Artists Awardess in 2000 and received Grand Jury Prize for Best Experimental Film at the Eksperimento 2001 International Film Festival. Her feature length narrative film Rigodon (co-directed
with husband Keith Sicat) was recently awarded the best foreign film feature at the 8th Panorama of Independent Cinema in Athens, Greece.
Camilla Benolirao Griggers, PhD, is a Certified Rubenfeld Synergist®, a Prepare for Surgery™ Counselor, and Certified Massage Therapist with a private practice in Santa Monica , California . She teaches at the Institute for Psycho-Structural Balancing and California State University at Channel Islands. In her bodymind integration practice, she combines guided visualization, touch, movement, language and energy-work to teach clients to reach their highest state of intelligence and adaptability.
She is the author of Becoming-Woman and numerous articles on culture, gender and health. Dr. Griggers is the director of Alienations of the Mother Tongue (1995) and The Micropolitics of Biopsychiatry (1996), and is the co-director of Memories of a Forgotten War. Her films, characterized by wrenching emotionality and astute cultural analysis, integrate healing, education, and visual media. Her films have screened at international film festivals, the Smithsonian, and the Museum of Modern Art , and have been reviewed by Variety , The New York Times and Asia Times. She is

In the decade following the Spanish-American War, more Filipinos were killed by US troops than by the Spanish during the 300 years of colonial rule. More than 1
million Filipinos died between 1899 and 1913. Yet few remember any details of the war or why it was fought, though the war’s history holds the key to twentieth
century US foreign policy in Southeast Asia. This experimental documentary about the Philippine-American war of 1899 combines archival photographs and turn-of-the-century film, digital video and 16mm film footage to create memories of a forgotten history. A contemporary Filipina-American narrator weaves this complex history through historiography, experimental documentary and intercultural cinema. Shot on location in the Philippines and edited in the US, MEMORIES OF A FORGOTTEN WAR was produced by an international team of Filipino and American film and media artists.

Sari Dalena was honored as one of the Cultural Center of the Philippine’s 13 Artists Awardess in 2000 and received Grand Jury Prize for Best Experimental Film at the Eksperimento 2001 International Film Festival. LABABO (Kitchen Sink) covers significant dates concerning the Philippines' relationship with the United States. Parallel to these historical events is the story of Kuala (a crazy woman based on the female character in Lino Brocka's "Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang") and a young woman named Juana who both fell for the same American soldier, Joe. "Lababo" is a look into the complex relationship between the Philippines and the United States. This relationship is mirrored in the lives of the film's protagonists, two Filipinas who fall in love with an American soldier. The short film comes at the most opportune time, when the Philippines is taking a closer look at the Visiting Forces Agreement in the wake of the alleged rape of a Filipina by American soldiers in Subic.

Video cameras in hand, they set off in search for clues by asking people if they might have come across a young man named "Onil" who claims he is the son of Brocka. They delve into the life of the National Artist, even going so far as to interview director Brocka's family members, friends, associates, and many of the actors and actresses he groomed. In the end, the journalists discover a lot of things about the late filmmaker-much more than they expected. This eye-opening digital feature includes interviews with many of the late directors protégés and colleagues including Nonie Buencamino, Jacklyn Jose, Gina Alajar, Bembol Roco, Angie Ferro, Jeffrey Quizon, Joonee Gamboa, Chanda Romero, Soxy Topacio, Menggie Cobarrubias, Geoff Eigenmann, Nanding Josef, Allan Paule, Timothy Diwa, Francis Magalona, Behn Cervantes, and Philip Salvador.
THIRTY-year old, six-feet four, and two-hundred pounds Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez was born to a family of writers and artists in Vito Cruz, Manila. At 16 years old, he wrote articles and interviewed alternative and underground musicians for 1990s Filipino rock music bible, Rock & Rhythm, while studying Political Science and trying out for a basketball varsity slot at the University of the East-Recto campus. He decided to leave school to learn more about filmmaking after watching short films done by Jon Red ("Trip") and Roxlee ("Tito's Wedding"), which a Humanities professor asked them to watch.
In 1999, he became part of the prestigious 11th Ricky Lee Scriptwriting Workshop and shortly after studied directing at the Filipino Feature Filmmaking class of Direk Marilou Diaz-Abaya in Ateneo. The year after, he further honed his craft at the 10th Cinema-As-Art Filmmaking Workshop at the Univeristy of the Philippines Film Center (UPFC) under Direks Tikoy Aguiluz and Raymond Red, among others.
His first job in the movie industry was as a script reader for Viva Films until he was given a chance to write his first script "Alas Dose" (2000). His next assignments include writing "Kilabot at Kembot" (2002), "Bertud ng Putik" (2003), and "Prosti" (2003) and acting for "Dos Ekis" (2001). He also wrote for TV shows like "Erik Matti's Kagat ng Dilim" (2001) and "Darating Ang Umaga" (2003) and acted for kiddie shows like "Hirayamanawari" and "DetekKids". In between, he was also taken as script reader for Seiko Films (2003).
His first foray into indie filmmaking was as an actor for Jon Red's "ASTIGmatism" (2004) whom he met for an aborted project ("Balong Malalim") back in 2001. He then acted for Khavn dela Cruz's "Barong Brothers" (2004), Topel Lee's "Nak Ng!" (2004), Ato Bautista's "Sa Aking Pagkakagising Mula Sa Kamulatan" (2004), and again for Jon Red in "Boso" (2004).
Before the year 2004 ended, he was finally given a chance to direct his first two films via film grants from Cinemalaya and Cinema One Originals. The result are the black comedy "Lasponggols (Last Take, Last Shot)" and the mockumentary "Ang Anak Ni Brocka (Lino Brocka's Son)". "Lasponggols" was invited to the Fribourg Film Festival in Switzerland last March and is again invited to the Leeds Film Festival in UK and the Hawaii Film Festival late this year. "Ang Anak ni Brocka" was screened last June at the Pesaro Film Festival in Italy and will also be screened at the San Pedro, California Film Festival and the Hawaii Film Festival. Aside from these, he also wrote Topel Lee's Cinema One entry "Dilim" and acted for other indie film festivals finalists like Mike Daganalan's "Isnats," Ron Bryant's "Baryoke," and Jon Red's "Anak Ng Tinapa".
Sanchez is also an accomplished music video director. He recently won Best Director plum for this year's Awit Awards for Sugarfree's "Hari Ng Sablay". His next video, Hale's "The Day You Said Goodnight" was also as successful as it was nominated at the 2005 NU Rock Awards for Best Music Video, the 2006 MYX Awards, and the 2006 Awit Awards. His third video Kyla's "Till They Take My Heart Away" is also faring well in the charts. He was also assistant director to Bamboo's "Hallelujah" video. He has two recent music videos in the tube, Shamrock's "Okey Lang" and Parokya Ni Edgar's newest video "Gitara".
He considers his stint at the actual film shoots of his filmmaker friends and mentors Erik Matti and Jon Red his best film schools.

To usher in New Year 2007, the UP Film Institute holds a special full run for one of the year’s most significant Filipino films, Kaleldo (Summer Heat),
directed by Brillante Mendoza and starring Cherry Pie Picache, Angel Aquino, Juliana Palermo and Johnny Delgado.
The acclaimed film that had its world premiere in the first ever Rome International Film Festival last October screens on

Its internationally exhibited full integral version (Director’s Cut) will be shown exclusively for the country’s premier state university community as a truly rare occasion not to be missed.
The saga of a domineering father and his three grownup daughters in a town devastated by volcanic eruption ten years earlier, Kaleldo sustains the expanding line of local titles prominently placing the Philippines in the world map of cinema. After serving as Opening Film at the Extra Section of the 1st Rome IFF (13-21 October 2006), Kaleldo made more world stops, namely, 43rd Vienna IFF (13-25 October 2006); 26th Hawaii IFF (Filipino Focus, 19-29 October 2006); 30th Cairo IFF (Festival
