isang natatanging musical number. Kaya ano pang inaantay niyo?
Kitakits! Pwede magdala ng date/nililigawan/ papakasalan. At kung
single, magsuot ng pulang laso o necktie!

NCCA screenings
Resident NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) film scholar/historian Teddy Co plays movie-mix-master- DJ on February 13, Tuesday at the NCCA in Intramuros by programming a potent, evil twin bill of the celebrated hidden classic TERROR IS A MAN, directed by legendary national artist filmmaker Gerardo de Leon, and the more recent internationally- acclaimed feature SA ILALIM NG COGON, directed
by Rico Maria Ilarde. TERROR screens at 1PM, while COGON follows at 3PM. Admission is FREE.
Gerardo de Leon, affectionately referred to as "Manong Gerry" within the industry, is the only director in the Philippines to have won the FAMAS Award for Best Director three consecutive times: in 1960, 1961 and 1962. He is also the most-awarded director in the history of the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences: 7 awards. Despite dabbling in the cinematographic field of the "genre film," de
Leon is renowned for creating some of the most finely-crafted Filipino films of his or of any era. A lasting testament to his legacy is that a number of his films have been extensively distributed and released on video around the world.
SA ILALIM NG COGON, meanwhile, is the very first Filipino film in history to win Best Picture at an international fantastic film festival (2005 Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre, Argentina). It competes again this March in South America in the capital of Uruguay, the city of Montevideo.
While at the NCCA, take a magical mystery tour through Cannes Film Festival-winning filmmaker Raymond Red's splendid exhibit/installatio n KAMERA OBSCURA. Enjoy all the attractions during NCCA's Philippine Arts Festival!
The NCCA is located at 633 NCCA Building, General Luna Street,
Intramuros, Manila, very close to the San Agustin Church.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
MTRCB R-18 [Strictly For Adults Only]
What are the critics saying about COMPOUND?
Edward Jordon, V.P. of Acquisitions, Film-Source Co.:
COMPOUND is a complex thriller that brilliantly reinvents itself as
the story unfolds. Just when you think you know where the movie is
going, the writer/director pulls the rug out from under you. This is
definitely a most auspicious debut from Will Fredo. His images will
remain with you for a long time.
Cleveland International Film Festival:
A stunning visual achievement, COMPOUND is a contemporary thriller
that deals with the complexities of love, wealth, and fear. A
perfectly unexpected and well-executed ending make this a film not to
be missed.
Tito Genova Valiente, Business Mirror:
"Compound" is not a film easy to love, and yet it is not a film easy
to hate. One thing is sure: it is not a film that can be dismissed
easily.
...The film allows us a peek into a middle-class paranoia...
There is, perhaps, no other Filipino film that approaches what
Christian Metz, the film semiotician, called the "aggregate, plural
property" of cinema as a medium than this film entitled "Compound.
Paul Daza, Philippine Daily Inquirer:
" MELROSE PLACE " As seen through the unflinching eyes of David Lynch
and Mike de Leon.
The movie's technical aspects, especially the lighting, camerawork,
sound and editing, are first-rate.
Also worthy of mention is the theme song of Bob Aves and Grace Nono,
which underscores the characters' mournful inability to find love and
happiness.
Joe Bilancio, Program Director, Reel Affirmations International Film
Festival:
COMPOUND is an independent gem. Well acted, well directed, and
inventive storytelling. Somehow Fredo and the cast are able to make
the film both plot driven AND character driven, a difficult feat for
any cast and crew.
David Corpuz, Mental Pornography:
While our minds are secured that we already knew the ending, we were
goddamn wrong. We're screwed. The director played with our mind and
he won.
The compound is the microcosm of the world we are living in. In the
compound, it's like every society's issue is present: drug addiction,
terrorism, homosexuality, greed for power and wealth, ignorance .. you
name it, it's in here.
Arcilla and Macapagal are noteworthy in their performances as
Virgilio and Jay, respectively. They deserve acting nominations, or
probably the trophy itself!
Rito Asilo, Philippine Daily Inquirer:
Arcilla and Macapagal are passionate actors with contrasting acting
styles, which work for their respective characters, but Diño and Chu
come up with the most informed performances in the ensemble --
particularly the former, who should get more roles in mainstream features.

To Be Presented by Nai Rui Chng
Martyn See is a Singaporean filmmaker most famous for making the 26-minute documentary film Singapore Rebel, about Dr. Chee Soon Juan, the leader of the opposition Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Before this he has worked as editor on the movie Mee Pok Man and the documentary Samurai: Behind the Blade.
In March 2005, government movie censors ordered the withdrawal of his film from the Singapore International Film Festival. See was put under police investigation by the Singapore government, and threatened with prosecution under the Films Act, requiring him to surrender his video camera, taped footage of the documentary and materials related to the production. See could face up to two years in jail or a fine of up to S$100,000.
Martyn See is now currently making a new 49 minute documentary on Singapore's ex-political prisoner Said Zahari, who spent a total of 17 years in detention without trial.

Richie Quirino and Collis Davis: PINOY JAZZ
The Story of Jazz in the Philippines
(The screening of PINOY JAZZ will be followed by a
Johnny Alegre Trio performance with open jam)
“Whatever it is you choose to play, don’t lose the Filipino soul.”
Lito Molina
Based on Richie Quirino’s book, Pinoy Jazz Traditions, which won the 2004 National Book Award in the music category, PINOY JAZZ is a 58-minute video documentary that provides the first-ever documentation of the development of jazz in the Philippines, from its infancy in 1898, when Filipinos were first exposed to Black music performed by African-American soldiers, to its present-day maturity in which musicians are
turning to indigenous sources for inspiration. Incorporating historical still photography, turn-of-the century film footage, maps, old recordings, present-day performances and interviews with veteran and contemporary musicians, the video presents an eye-opening view into an almost-forgotten history of the art of jazz as it developed in the Philippines over the last century.

Mark and Joaquin Misa: SA KABILANG DAKO PROGRAM
San-Pits Productions would like to invite you to SA KABILANG DAKO-- an independent docu-experimental digital film exhibit featuring two inspired works by cousins Marc Misa and Joaquin Misa. The featured short films are:
LARO SA QUIAPO (20 minutes)
Laro Sa Quiapo is a glimpse into a day in the life of urban poor children who have made Quiapo their playground. Quiapo is associated with the Black Nazarene, amulet and herbal medicine vendors, fortune tellers, and cheap DVDs in the Muslim quarter. Nick Joaquin once called it the armpit of Manila, for indeed, the filth and stench of the streets of Quiapo make it a harsh environment in which to grow up. Some children, however, have managed to claim this piece of earth to have something like childhood.

EYE CANDY POETRY (30 minutes)
Eye Candy Poetry is the beat of the city. These experimental short films are created with the muddled dispositions and inspirations that roam the streets of Manila and its people. With several different rivers of undertones, each image or segment is free to be interpreted by the viewer according to whatever he or she experiences it to be. Using a particular recipe of camera techniques and playful editing, Eye Candy
Poetry manifests a flavor of its own and utilizes this taste to fascinate, haunt, or even pleasure the visual palette of the audience. Eye Candy Poetry is a continuous endeavor that will always evolve according to the tides of experience and thought.

Ditsi Carolino: RILES
(Philippines/Documentary/2002/Digital/70 mins)
From the first astonishing shots of men, women and children casually moving their belongings from the railroad tracks seconds in front of an onrushing train, Ditsi Carolino makes the viewer feel completely at home in what should be the most alien of environments. Focused on a couple, the film settles into the rhythm of life along the tracks in Manila with an intimacy that never feels intrusive. RILES is a humbling and indelible portrait of human dignity, resilience and community.

Featuring Martyn See’s SINGAPORE REBEL and SPEAKERS’ CORNERED

Incorporating historical still photography, turn-of-the century film footage, maps, old recordings, present-day performances and interviews with veteran and contemporary musicians, the video presents an eye-opening view into an almost-forgotten history of the art of jazz as it developed in the Philippines over the last century.

sparks his growth from boyhood in this Spanish drama. The story takes place
during a vacation to the hometown of nine-year-old Javi and his brother
Juan's rural farming village in the early 1960s. Their father, they are
told, accidentally killed himself while cleaning his gun, and the room where
the death occurred has been declared off limits to the boys. *Secretos del
corazón* was the winner of four Goya Awards, as well as an Oscar nominee for
Best Foreign Language Film.

Mexican director Arturo Ripstein's incredibly lush melodrama *The Virgin of

Communists to lift up the masses. Set mostly in a café in Vera Cruz, the
film centers upon Nacho (Luis Felipe Tovar), an unambitious worker who one
fateful night finds Lola, a mysterious and promiscuous political radical who
lives so far on the edge that she always seems on the threat of
self-destruction. Nacho, who is hopelessly attracted to her but too afraid
to act upon his impulses, takes her in, and soon the two find themselves in
a masochistic relationship.

A movie depicting a sincere portrait of urban life in Barcelona. The story
moves around six friends whose sentimental lives are masked with hidden
relationships, fear in expressing sentiments, secrets and lies. Mario is a
serious architect married to Sara who keeps a secretive romance with a
colleague. Mario suspects it, but does not dare to speak about it. Irene and
Manu, on the other hand, seem to be a happy couple, but the truth is that
Irene is like a turtle succumbed in its shell and hides her feelings. Sofía
lives alone who fantasizes realities out of her dreams. And finally, Tomás
who also keeps a secret of a passionate adventure with a young girl. The
film boasts of a magnificent script and great performances by its actors
like Eduard Fernández who won two Best Supporting Actor Awards in Goya (the
Spanish Oscars) and in Spanish Actors Union. But the real standout here is
María Pujalte, as a sensitive woman addicted to romance.
