Synopsis

Gruesome and grisly murders are our entry point into the psyche of the Aswang of Quezon City. More a meditation on the workings of a disturbed mind than a detective thriller, it nonetheless shows us a cat and mouse mind game. Bor Ocampo: THE SUNFLOWER (Digital/5 minutes/2006/Philippines)

Synopsis of MEAN WELL

Two devils, Elvie and Godo, go through an apartment building complex in search of an angel-went-down-to-earth-to-live-a-week-of-normal-human-life to tempt and gain points so as to win the annual contest for devils, the winner of which gets one wish granted. Elvie, the more senior of the two, wants to level-up and get her own demon minions; while Godo, a relatively-recent "fallen", would wish to be able to get back in heaven. Unbeknownst to Godo, his low level doesn't qualify him for the contest and Elvie is just using him to get more points. As they search for the angel-sent-down-to-earth-to-live-a-week-of-normal-human-life, they try to tempt the tenants of the building with mixed results.

Who among the building tenants is the angel-sent-down-to-earth-to-live-a-week-of-normal-human-life? Which devil will get a wish granted? Will everyone go to hell?

Simultaneously, there’s this woman who gets each flower almost everyday (flowers the guy had offered) for some reason that has something to do with her past or merely out of deviancy. Auraeus Solito & Michiko Yamamoto: ANG PAGDADALAGA NI MAXIMO OLIVEROS (Narrative/2005)

Winning a good number awards from film festivals in the country and abroad, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros was selected as the official entry of the Philippines to the Academy Awards in March 2007. The film tells the story of a 12-year-old effeminate gay boy who lives in the slums with his family who is engaged in petty crimes. Maxi, as he is fondly called in the neighborhood, is openly gay but is doted by his father and two brothers. Assuming most of the chores in the house since the death of his mother, Maxi’s world practically revolves around his family until he befriends Victor, a handsome policeman. Maxi eventually falls for Victor. Maxi is then torn between his affection for Victor and the family he so-loved. Neorealist in orientation, the film is a tale of lost innocence and redemption amidst the crushing poverty of Manila's slums.

Maximo is penned by award-winning writer Michiko Yamamoto who is also behind the critically-acclaimed film Magnifico. Yamamoto traced her screenwriting training to the scriptwriting workshop of the Film Development Foundation of the Philippines in 1999. Yamamoto has since then worked with major production studios and TV networks as a creative staff and writer.

Born in Manila in 1969, Auraeus Solito studied drama at the University of the Philippines and cinema at the Mowelfund Film Institute. He has made several music videos and experimental shorts including The Brief Lifespan of Fire, Act 2, Scene 2: Suring and the Kuk-ok, which was shown at several international festivals. His feature documentary, Basal Banar (Sacred Ritual of Truth) was shown at the Montreal First People’s Festival. The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros is his first fiction feature.
