Synopsis:
Under Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge regime between 1974 and 1979, nearly 20,000 people were imprisoned, interrogated, tortured and executed at the detention and torture centre in central Phnom Penh, S21. Rithy Panh carried out a long inquiry with not only the rare survivors, but also their former torturers. In confronting torturers and victims, he leads us to a shattering reflection on the mechanism of totalitarianism.
